Did you know that Shopify merchants are not limited to selling online? With the Shopify Point of Sale system, you can sell in person. This could be for something as small as a pop-up, or as large as a retail store. Shopify offers two different point of sale systems. That’s why Fyresite has broken them down to help you find the right one for your business.

The Basics of Shopify POS

Shopify Point of Sale system, or Shopify POS, refers to either the POS Lite or POS Pro. A point of sales system allows you to track your sales. In Shopify’s case, it refers to an app that allows you to sell in-person from almost anywhere.

POS Lite

This point of sale system is free with every Shopify Plan.

POS Lite has integrated Shopify Payments, has non-payment retail integrations, a customizable smart grid, the ability to create and edit customer profiles, a customer view app, multi-location management, email/sms receipts, manual and code discounts, gift cards, Shopify Tax in the US, camera barcode scanning, custom sales, cash payments, refunds and cash tracking.

Depending on your Shopify plan tier, you can also have staff pins.

The drawbacks of Lite is that there is limited staff access, returns are restricted to the same location as they were purchased, and the customer profiles have less information than the POS Pro profiles.

POS Pro

The Shopify Retail plan receives one free POS Pro location. Shopify Basic, Shopify, and Shopify Advanced allow you to add on POS Pro locations for $89/month per location. Shopify Plus merchants get the first 20 Pro locations free.

In comparison, the POS Pro plan has all the benefits of POS Lite, plus allows unlimited staff access, assigned staff roles and permissions, customer profiles and loyalty insights, unlimited POS-only staff, and sales attribution.

They also have helpful shopping features, such as exchanges, saving/retrieving cart, email carts, ship to home option, pick-up in store, local delivery, advanced inventory management, daily sales reports, in-app retail store analytics, and required checkout information.

Which Shopify POS Option is Better?

When it comes to eCommerce, there is no ‘better’, because the right fit depends on your business.

If you want a robust system for selling in person, or are managing multiple retail locations, a Shopify POS Pro plan is for you.

On the other hand, if you’re doing limited in-person selling, such as pop-ups, or only have one location where you’re selling in-person and only need basic features, Shopify POS Lite is perfect for you.
